Botox Studied As Possible Tennis Elbow Remedy

Botox has potential as a treatment for chronic tennis elbow, according to an article recently published in the Journal of the Canadian Medical Association.

Researchers in Tehran have been experimenting with Botulinum toxin as a treatment for lateral epicondylitis, a condition commonly known as tennis elbow.

A randomized placebo-controlled trial was conducted with 48 patients, who were injected with either Botox or saline, the placebo. Injection sites were customized for each patient’s anatomy.

When the injections were performed with anatomic measurements as a guide, they “significantlyreduced pain at rest” in those who suffer from chronic tennis elbow. Physicians caution that because of side effects, the treatment may not be appropriate for patients who require finger extension.

“It does seem that cosmetic surgery is on the rise” says reporter Mahammed Jamjoom, who stands by while rhinoplasty is performed on 26-year old Noor Aziz.

ASPS Releases 2009 Plastic Surgery Statistics

While many plastic surgeons (as well as other professionals) might call 2009 a down year, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the past ten years have been anything but.

Statistics recorded since 2000 indicate a major spike in consumer interest for plastic surgery and cosmetic enhancement. According to the society, plastic surgery is up 69 percent in the last ten years, minimally invasive procedures are way up, and consumer interest is continually rising.

Minimally invasive cosmetic procedures appear to be the driving force behind the 10-year increase. Procedures like Botox, Injectable Fillers, and Laser Skin Resurfacing have spiked 99 percent since the year 2000. People have many reasons to visit their plastic surgeon right now. One of the main reasons is skin renewal. “Skin is in,” says ASPS President Michael McGuire.

National Women’s Health Week May 9-15 2010

A national campaign has been launched this mother’s day asking citizens to promote women’s health by “breaking existing barriers” and “improving the health of American women for generations to come.”

This week has been declared Women’s Health Week. In an official Whitehouse press release, the President urged Americans to:

Emphasize the role of women in promoting the vitality of our children and communities.
Lead healthy lives and set an example for young people.
Take advantage of preventive care with routine screenings and checkups.
Remember the simple everyday health steps like using sunscreen, exercising regularly, and eating healthy.

Some new online resources were also cited for promoting the goals of women’s health week, including the Whitehouse Council on Women and Girls, womenshealth.gov, and girlshealth.gov.

Reading the book Wikinomics given to me by my daughter for father’s day prompted me to act and start a blog. It seems a good effort.
