Botox Cosmetic® is a purified form of the same poison that occurs in botulism poisoning. When a precisely measured small amount is injected into a muscle, that muscle is paralyzed and the overlying skin does not move. This stops the wear of the skin and prevents a wrinkle. If a wrinkle is already there, it gradually softens. The deeper the wrinkle, the longer time it takes for the wrinkle to soften
The muscles of the face often have a matching muscle that moves the tissue in the opposing direction. Weakening or paralyzing a muscle with Botox can leave these other muscles unopposed and cause odd brow shapes or brow droop or undesired lower lid shape.
It is important the Botox be administered by someone who understands the way it works and the interplay of the facial muscles so the patients get the desired results.
When given in cosmetic doses, Botox lasts 3-4 months.
Botox® comes as a powder in vials of 100 units and is mixed with saline to prepare it for injection. We only do Botox® on certain days when we can batch patients together to keep costs low. I believe that once mixed the Botox® will loose its effectiveness with storage, so to keep quality high, we only use Botox® that is less than 48 hours old.
As the plastic surgeon, I do all the Botox® injections.
Who should consider Botox?
Botox Cosmetic® is indicated for the temporary correction of moderate to severe glabellar lines (frown lines) associated with corrugator and/or procerus muscle activity in patients 18 to 65 years of age. If you exhibit lines on the smooth part of your forehead above and between the brows (the glabella), you should consider treatment with Botox Cosmetic®.
Botox Cosmetic® is contraindicated if the patient exhibits an infection at the proposed injection site(s) and or has a known hypersensitivity to any botulinum toxin preparation or to any of the components in the formulation. Do not undergo Botox treatment if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or if you have experienced an allergic reaction to another product containing botulinum toxin.
